Anointed Interpreter
Workshop 2008
Workshops Titles
and Descriptions
Workshop Title: Fingerspelling and Figures
Presented
by: Susan Tyrrell CI/CT NIC
Description: We use them fluently to communicate daily with others to
provide detail and clarity. For many of our younger years we endured
proficiency test weekly to enhance our ability of grouping them
successfully. Yet these little characters terrorize us in our work.
We avoid them at every cost, we close our eyes when we see them coming,
and we allow them to damage our work. Yes we all know them as
the important pieces of fingerspelling and figures. This workshop
will remind us that we are in control of this process called
fingerspelling. Practical tools supported by hands on activities will
give you more confidence in using fingerspelling and numbers during your
interpreting work
Workshop Title: Hands Up
Presented
by: Renee Thomas NIC
Description: This workshop will focus on allowing interpreters to
practice their skills interpreting in church situations. The goal of
this workshop is to provide a safe environment for new interpreters to
get their hands up and receive feedback on their performance. This
workshop is heavy in participation and will attempt to incorporate a
variety of strategies for handling religious interpreting. This workshop
caters to interpreting students, recent interpreter graduates, and
church interpreters.
Workshop Title: What is The Sign For…?
Presented
by: Chuck Tripi
This workshop will discuss vocabulary and terminology within a Religious
Interpreting environment. As interpreters we know that the magic phrase
is “Dump the Words and go for the Meaning”. Knowing what the concept is
that the Pastor, Priest or Evangelist is trying to convey always helps.
Sometimes religious concepts are some of the most difficult concepts to
interpret. How Mr. Tripi will demonstrate this is by working on the song
“Amazing Grace”. This will illustrate how difficult some of the concepts
can be if you do not “Drop the Words!”
